Why The Loading Dock Joined The B Corp Movement
Here at The Loading Dock, we’re more than just a coworking space: we’re a company that’s fiercely dedicated to doing good. We want to use our influence as a coworking and cowarehousing space in the Triangle to make a positive impact on our community and the environment. That’s why we decided to join the international B Corp movement by becoming a Certified B Corporation.
B Corporations (B Corps) are companies whose commitments to meeting rigorous standards for social and environmental impact have been authenticated by a nonprofit network called B Lab. As we pursued our B Corp Certification, The Loading Dock partnered with NC State University’s B Corp Clinic. With the B Corp Clinic’s help, we were able to complete a rigorous verification process called the B Impact Assessment and receive our B Corp status.
We are beyond thrilled to have reached such a big milestone in our company’s history. We believe that becoming a B Corp is a decisive step towards achieving our company’s mission and vision.
Our efforts to complete the B Corp certification process were fueled by a partnership with our parent company Murphy’s Naturals. They were also driven by key members on our leadership team including The Loading Dock’s Chief Operating Officer Jessie Hathcock.
Here’s what Jessie had to say about why The Loading Dock chose to embark on the challenging but rewarding journey towards becoming a B Corp.
“Getting certified as a B Corp publicly announces that we are a company committed to doing good, and elevates the B Corp movement across the world,” she said. “We want to be known as a company that cares, and that is committed to continuously refining our business practices to reduce our environmental footprint while enhancing our social impact in the community.”
We are proud to be a B Corp but we don’t want to stop here. We would love for our members, fellow businesses and the local community to join us on this journey towards doing good.
That’s why we’ve decided to organize a B Corp Lunch and Learn series. Every quarter we’ll be putting on a workshop that will help demystify the B Corp process and give attendees the tools they need to start their own B Corp journeys.
On May 18th, we’re hosting a workshop called Developing a Roadmap for Success that will show participants how to create a framework for starting the B Corp Certification process. On August 31st, we’ll be having a B Corp Hackathon that will serve as a working session for individuals who need help with their organization’s B Impact Assessment.
Whether you attend a B Corp Lunch and Learn or stop by for one of our quarterly volunteer opportunities, we hope that you will join us as we seek to use business as a force for good.
